Munchkin Basketball Rules & Objectives
The purpose of Munchkin Basketball is for participants to have fun, get exercise and to learn basic skills and rules of the game in a positive and safe setting. Basic skills: DRIBBLING – PASSING and CATCHING A PASS – SHOOTING Basic rules: - LEARN TEAM WORK OUT OF BOUNDS CHANGE OF POSSESSION AFTER A BASKET WHICH BASKET THEY SHOOT AND WHICH ONE THEY DEFEND PASSING THE BALL INBOUNDS All players must try to dribble while bringing the ball down the court.
Score is not kept.
Coaches are responsible for ensuring every player gets an opportunity to dribble, shoot, and pass the ball inbounds.
Jump Ball will occur at the beginning of the game.
There is no fighting over the ball. If a ball goes out it is up to the closest coach to determine who has possession. If two opposing players catch a rebound together, the closest coach will also determine possession. The ball will be taken to the sideline and passed in.
When the ball is passed in, all defensive players must be at the basket that they are defending. This will help foster dribbling down the court vs. running with the ball.
The ball will change hands only when a basket is made, a rebound is made, or the ball is rolling loose and picked up. This is to increase confidence and allow the coaches to involve the timid players.
There is no stealing. Coaches are to discourage players from smacking the ball while it is in someone else’s hands.
Let’s all remember that we are here to have fun, get some exercise, and learn to play basketball. We would like this to be a positive experience for all of the players.
If any parent or coach feels these rules hinder the advancement of a specific player, please contact the Munchkin Representative to discuss moving the player up to the Cosmos level. The previous rules and objectives for Munchkin Basketball are non-negotiable.
